With the start of Autumn just over a month away, it’s a great time to get inspired by fall colors. We’ve asked three interior designers with beautiful aesthetics to help our customers choose fall colors that will work for year-round living. This, the first in the series, introduces Portland designer, Jason Ball.
Jason has won distinctions for his kitchen designs and use of color. He is also a regular contributor on Houzz.com. He’s a designer to watch.
With his modern, warm aesthetic, Jason’s the ideal interior designer to address a few of our customers’ color conundrums. We’ve also included a couple of images from his portfolio to help illustrate Jason’s advice.
Although Jason is located in Portland, he’s available to clients all over (he’s currently working on a project in Florida in addition to his local projects). Get in touch with Jason over at JasonBallInteriors.com, and drop a comment with your own questions!
Backsplash design: Jason says that warm brown is one of the best fall colors - it is reminiscent of leaves after they've fallen to the ground.
Customer Question #1
Can you have fall colors in your living room all year round? At present, I have white walls and very little decor but a large brown/orange sectional sofa with dark hardwood. Would the colors look good or out of place during spring and summer? I love the colors and think they would go well in my living room but I am worried about the darkness of my room and how much to use. When is it too much?
JBI: Absolutely fall colors can work all year round. There is such a huge range of fall colors – brownish yellows, deep red tones and browns. However, for these colors to really work all year round and with most other decors, think about using the more toned down versions of these colors. A slightly brownish yellow as a hallway color or maybe a deep red-orange in a dining room are great tones to use.

Customer Question #2
My Husband loves Fall colors- all the oranges, rusts, golds and browns; the problem is I can’t stand to have the house decorated in such muted tones. It feels lifeless to me. Is there a way we can both be happy? Is there a way to decorate that will incorporate his love of Autumn with my love of all things green and fresh?
JBI: There are two ways to approach this predicament. The easiest way to for each of you to get separate rooms for your favorite colors. The more creative and interesting way is to incorporate both colors in the same room. For instance, consider a deep brown with a fresh green or blue. These are both classic combinations that are beautiful together. Some of the fall colors (or slight variations of) can be neutral enough to work with the spring colors, and you’ll both be happy.
Customer Question #3
What are the easiest fall colors to use that can transition to other seasons? I really like pumpkins, but am not sure how to transition that color to the winter season. I don’t want to have to buy a lot of accessories, nor do I have the place to store them. Could you help me pick a color for my walls in the fall palette that will work with all seasons?
